Article 1:

The Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) is an annual festival organized by the Ministry of Culture in Egypt. It is accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Association (FIAPF), and is committed to comply with all its stipulations.


Article 2:

CIFF aims to contribute towards the development of the art and science of film (Fiction– Documentary) and encourage intercultural dialogue.


Article 3:

The 39th Cairo International Film Festival will be held in Cairo from November 21 – 30, 2017 at the Opera House.


Article 4:

The CIFF sections are:

  • Official Selection for feature and documentary films: International Competition – Out of Competition.
  • Horizons of New Arab Cinema Competition for feature and documentary films. 
  • International Critic's Week Competition for feature and documentary films. 
  • Cinema of Tomorrow International Competition (CTIC) for short films.
  • Festival of Festivals.
  • International Panorama.
  • New Egyptian Cinema (2016 – 2017).
  • Feature film classics.
  • Tributes.
  • Guest of Honor from world cinema. 
Other activities include:

  • Cairo Film Connection
  • Seminars

Article 5:

Faten Hamama Awards:

  • Faten Hamama Honorary Award 
  • Faten Hamama Excellence Award
The Festival grants two prizes in the name of the Egyptian actress Faten Hamama to prominent film figures for their contribution to enrich the cinematographic art.

Article 6:

To participate in the International Competition for feature and documentary films, they must meet the following criteria:

  • The film should not have been screened in the International Competition of any of the 15 festivals accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Association (FIAPF). 
  • The film must not have been screened in Egypt before.
  • Regarding the Egyptian film, it should be a world premiere.
  • The Film must be produced after September 2016.
  • Duration of the film must exceed sixty minutes.
  • The film must not have been screened on any TV or sat channel, or any internet site. 

Article 7:

The board of the Cairo International Film Festival will choose the jury of the international competition for feature and documentary films. All Jury members must not have any relation to any film in the four competitions. The jury will be composed according to the rules of the FIAPF.


Article 8:

The jury of the International Competition will award the following prizes:

  • The Golden Pyramid for best film, presented to the producer (The award should not be attributed ex-aequo).
  • The Silver Pyramid, Special Jury Prize, for best director.
  • The Bronze Pyramid for First or Second Work, for the director.
  • Naguib Mahfouz Prize for best screenplay.
  • Prize of the best actor. 
  • Prize of the best actress.
  • Prize for best artistic contribution.

Article 9:

The International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) will grant two prizes awarded by its jury that will comprise a president and two members. The prizes will be announced at the start of the closing ceremony of the festival.


Article 10:

To participate in the Horizons of New Arab Cinema Competition for feature and documentary films, they must meet the following criteria:

  • The film must be produced after September 2016.
  • Duration of the film must exceed sixty minutes.
  • The film must not have been screened in Egypt before.
  • The film must not have been screened on any TV or sat channel, or any internet site

Article 11:

The board of the Cairo International Film Festival will choose the jury of the Horizons of New Arab Cinema Competition. All Jury members must not have any relation to any film in the four competitions.

The Jury will award the following prizes:

  • Saad Eldin Wahba Prize for Best Arabic Film, presented by the Egyptian Filmmakers Syndicate (EFMS).
  • Salah Abu Seif Prize for Best Artistic Contribution , presented by the Egyptian Filmmakers Syndicate (EFMS).

Article 12:

To participate in International Critic’s Week Competition for feature and documentary films, they must meet the following criteria:

  • The film must be the director's first or second work.
  • The film must be produced after September 2016. 
  • Duration of the film must exceed sixty minutes.
  • The film must not have been screened in Egypt before.
  • The film must not have been screened on any TV or sat channel, or any internet site


Article 13:

The board of the Cairo International Film Festival will choose the jury of the International Critic’s Week Competition in collaboration with the Egyptian Film Critics Association. All Jury members must not have any relation to any film in the four competitions.

The Jury will award the following prizes:

  • Shadi Abdel Salam Prize for Best Film, awarded to the director, presented by the Egyptian Film Critics Association (EFCA) 
  • Fathy Farag Prize for Best Artistic Contribution , presented by the Egyptian Film Critics Association (EFCA) 


Article 14:

To participate in Cinema of Tomorrow International Competition (CTIC) for short films, films must meet the following criteria:

  • The film must be produced after September 2016. 
  • Duration of long film must exceed Thirty minutes.
  • All genres of shorts are accepted: feature, documentary, animation, experimental.
  • The film must not have been screened in Egypt before.
  • The film must not have been screened on any TV or sat channel, or any internet site


Article 15:

The board of the Cairo International Film Festival will choose the jury of the Cinema of Tomorrow International Competition (CTIC) for short films. All Jury members must not have any relation to any film in the four competitions.
The Jury will award the following prizes:

  • Youssef Chahine Prize for Best Short Film.
  • The Special Jury Prize.

Article 16:

To participate in the other festival sections (Official Selection out of Competition Festival of Festivals, International Panorama), films must meet the following criteria:

  • The film must be produced after September 2016. 
  • Duration of the film must exceed sixty minutes.
  • The film must not have been screened in Egypt before.
  • The film must not have been screened on any TV or sat channel, or any internet site.

Article 17:

The films are selected by a direct invitation from the board of the Cairo International Film Festival. The application window will be opened from April 4th to September 24, 2017.


Article 18:

General requirements for all films participating in the festival:

  • All films must fill the required entry form on the festival website www.ciff.org.eg.
  • All films must send a link to download the film or a DVD copy with English subtitles by post to the CIFF address (17 Kasr El Nil Street - Cairo, Egypt). The sender shall take care of the postal expenses. The film title and the director’s name should be printed on the parcel in English, accompanied by the following phrase “Without commercial value and for cultural purposes only.” 
  • In case the film is selected, the following material should be sent by email to (films@ciff.org.eg) not later than October 15, 2017:
    • Stills from the film.
    • Biography, filmography and photo of the director.
    • Three minutes of the film for promotional purposes.
    • English spotting list of the film to be sent by email.
  • In case the film is selected, screening copy of the film shall be sent with the poster of the film, at the expense of CIFF, not later than October 15, 2017. The copy must meet the following criteria:
    • The copy must be (DCP and Blu- Ray).
    • The copy must be in the original language of the film.
    • The copy must be with English subtitles.
  • The screening of the selected film must not exceed 5 projections according to the FIAPF regulations and with the agreement of the right holders.
  • Once a film has been selected and the producer has confirmed, it cannot be withdrawn from the festival.

Article 19:

The festival administration will cover the cost of electronic subtitles in Arabic for films in the International competition.

Article 20:

In accordance with FIAPF Regulations, screening copies will be insured by CIFF for the duration they are in its possession.


Article 21:

CIFF will cover the cost of returning the screening copies not later than December 17th, 2017.


Article 22:

Participation in the Cairo International Film Festival designates full acceptance of all regulation articles which are issued in Arabic and English and are subject to Egyptian laws. In case of any dispute, the original Arabic text is to be taken as the decisive transcript.
